1.1Socrates was the light of every gathering.

1.2His name stood beyond compare, for he had wit enough to charm the powerful and wisdom enough to lift up the poor.

1.3Wherever he went, people gathered, only to share in his laughter and his splendid talk.

1.4Some called him shabby. In truth he was the hardest guest in all Athens to obtain.

1.5A guest who cannot be bought is the costliest dish at the table.

1.6Yet those who held worldly power watched his name with a hatred that cut to the bone.

1.7They saw that the hearts of the young belonged to Socrates and not to the rulers of the city.

1.8And they understood: a man who wins the love of the people by truth is far more to be feared than a tyrant with an army.
